1.
Calculate the size of the liner needed. To do
this, add twice the pond depth to each dimension,
then add another two feet minimum. In some
conditions some liners will require underlayment.
The liner manufacturer will indicate which liners
need this protective layer between the liner and
certain types of soil. For example, some liners
need underlayment for use with rocky soil.
2.
Mark the outline with a rope or garden hose.
3.
Remove sod, then dig out shelves. Most ponds
are designed with shelves 9-12" below water
level to hold plants.

4.
Dig deep area of pond. Pond sides should slope in
about 20 degrees from vertical. Check level of
pond bottom with board and spirit level. Using
flat spade, cut a ledge around the edge of the
pond for edging material. Check edges of hole
for level.
5.
Prepare the hole for the liner by removing stones
or roots and by adding 2-3 inches of sand to the
bottom of the hole. If recommended, add fabric
underlayment at this point.
